How stunningly moving are images and stories from Myanmar, showing a true "Solidarity" movement of courageous Buddhist monks, standing in behalf of a repressed and fearful citizenry to protest the junta's ongoing insensitivity and brutality.

We should always be moved when selfless people put their lives on the line for the benefit of others.

By contrast, how pathetic and vain were our own president's protestations before the U.N. General Assembly against the same repressive government.

What he spoke from one side of his mouth to the United Nations Sept. 25 demands comparison to the record of his deeds. Since 9/11, the Bush administration has continued renewal of the Patriot Act, admitted illegal wiretaps and other invasions of privacy, suspended habeas corpus, proven atrocities against alleged terrorist aliens.
