COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Brigham Young linebacker Bryan Kehl won the Mountain West Conference defensive player of the week award Monday after making 10 tackles and accounting for two turnovers in the Cougars' 31-24 victory at New Mexico on Saturday.

Texas Christian running back Aaron Brown won the award for offense, and Utah punt returner Derrek Richards was honored for his performance on special teams.

Kehl had a sack, forced and recovered a fumble and returned his first career interception 36 yards for a touchdown in BYU's win.

Brown rushed for 124 yards on 22 carries and caught three passes for 26 yards Saturday night in TCU's 24-12 victory over Colorado State.

Richards generated 135 yards on four punt returns, including a 75-yarder that produced a touchdown Saturday in Utah's 34-18 win over Utah State. It was Utah's first punt return for a score since 2000, when Steve Smith returned one against California.
