OREM — Pleasant Grove jumped out to a big lead in the first half and then hung on to squeeze out a 24-21 win over Timpanogos Friday night.

The Vikings (5-2) went up 21-0 with one minute remaining in the first half when Brian Schonbeck ran the ball in from four yards out to cap an 11-play, 3:27 minute drive.

Rather than run the clock out in the final minute before halftime, the Timberwolves put together a 7-play, no-huddle drive that consisted mostly of quick passes from Christian Stewart to Taylor Lyons and Grant Jimenez. Stewart capped the drive with two seconds remaining in the half with a scrambling pass to Jimenez in the back of the end zone.

The Timberwolves (2-4) sustained the momentum after halftime. They had the first possession in the second half and went right back to the no-huddle offense with a series of quick out passes to a variety of receivers. This time it took only 1:15 to drive 74 yards for the score. The score came on a 45-yard pass from Stewart to Skyler Fairbanks.

With the score at 21-14, the momentum continued for the Timberwolves as they forced a Pleasant Grove fumble three plays later at midfield. Timpanogos looked like it would take advantage of the turnover, but LeSean Wilcox intercepted Stewart in the end zone to end the threat.

The momentum changed quickly in the Vikings' favor as they ground out an 11-play drive that consumed 7:30 of the third quarter. The time-consuming drive culminated in a 36-yard field goal by Josue Meza to push the lead back to 10 points at 24-14.

Timpanogos answered again near the beginning of the fourth quarter with another quick scoring drive. Stewart completed five of seven passes on the drive, including the touchdown to Fairbanks from 14 yards out to pull the Timberwolves within a field goal at 24-21.

The Vikings responded just as they had done all night. They were able to run time off the clock with a long drive even though they weren't able to put points on the board.

When Timpanogos finally got the ball back it wasn't able to put together a drive and punted away to Pleasant Grove with 3:32 remaining in the game. The Timberwolves weren't able to stop the Vikings and never got another opportunity on offense.

Early in the first half, the Vikings looked like they were going to turn Timpanogos' Homecoming game into an ugly blowout. Pleasant Grove got on the scoreboard just minutes into the game when Wilcox got loose for a 26-yard touchdown run.

The Vikings scored again on their next possession. They drove 43 yards all on the ground with Wilcox coming up with a 3-yard touchdown run to give Pleasant Grove a 14-0 lead.
