The Utah Department of Environmental Quality filed a civil suit Wednesday against two West Valley individuals they believe to be storing hundreds of unlabeled drums and open containers on property at the corner of 2090 South and 7200 West.

Abandoned vehicles, alkaline batteries and old motor homes also are scattered on the property, and an oily, foul-smelling substance has soaked the soil, according to documents filed in court.

The environmental agency believes that the waste has created a hazardous materials situation. Officials plan to do a preliminary assessment, then further investigate the site. Runoff from the property may be seeping into nearby Kersey Creek, according to the documents.

The DEQ has asked the court to allow its representatives onto the property for purposes of inspection. It also wants the court to permanently order the defendants to stop restricting the agency's entry onto the property.
