A Roy man entered a no-contest plea Wednesday to a negligent homicide charge in connection with a scuffle with a Weber State College golfer who died from head injuries.

Dave Mathews, 23, entered his plea before 3rd Circuit Court Judge Brent West. Sentencing was set for July 15.

Mark Doherty, 21, Cheyenne, Wyo., died when his head hit the ground after Mathews struck him outside a downtown Ogden hotel on May 14.

Doherty, who had been drinking, and Mathews got into a fight after the victim asked the defendant for a ride home, witnesses said. Words were exchanged and Mathews struck Doherty in the face. Doherty fell backward and struck his head on the pavement.

The WSC junior was taken to a local hospital and pronounced brain dead. He died later that day after life-support machinery was disconnected.
