A U.S. Army helicopter flying in formation with other choppers hit a power line near a highway and crashed Thursday, bursting into flames and killing its crew of three, West German police reported.

Two crew members were killed immediately and a third died aboard a rescue helicopter en route to a hospital, the spokesman said. The names of the dead were withheld pending notification of their relatives.

A U.S. Army spokesman said the helicopter belonged to the 193rd Aviation Company of the 56th Field Artillery Command, a Pershing-2 nuclear missile unit.
