The Salt Lake Police Association began informational picketing outside City Hall Wednesday, to protest cuts in the police department budget.
"Crime rate is up, police morale is down," and "Down 90 officers since 1977," proclaimed signs carried by officer Rob Reese. Other signs carried the messages: "Will the mayor talk to you? He won't talk to us," and "Your safety is forgotten in the mayor's budget."Reese said he is expected to be joined by other officers as the picketing continues in as many as 11 locations through next week.
Mayor Palmer DePaulis said he recognizes the police are unhappy over not receiving salary increases and other departmental budget cuts but said there is simply no money in the budget this year.
