A 16-year-old girl who had been driving about one week did not know she had hit and fatally injured a man until after the truck she was driving came to a stop in his driveway.

Sandy police are still investigating the accident that left Bartel Van Oostendorp III dead after the young driver's truck left the road on Petunia Way near Jasmine Avenue at 9935 South Tuesday morning. The girl told police she had looked down for about three seconds to adjust the truck's tape player when one of two friends riding in the truck screamed. She looked up and saw bricks flying, then the truck hit a brick wall and stopped, according to a police report.

Van Oostendorp, 65, 1377 E. Jasmine Ave., had apparently been working in his yard when the truck left the road, crossed the sidewalk and hit him after it knocked down a mailbox on a brick stand and struck two trees.

Van Oostendorp was taken to Alta View Hospital, then flown to University Hospital where he died almost one hour after the 10:15 a.m. accident.

The girl driving the truck and her two friends were on their way to Alta High School for a yearbook signing party at the time of the accident.

Sandy police plan to screen the case with the Salt Lake County attorney's office.
