The assets of Universal Mobility Inc. of Salt Lake City have been purchased by The Transportation Group Inc., Orlando, Fla., a transit systems subsidiary of Bombardier Inc., one of the work's largest rail transit vehicle manufacturers.

UMI provided nine rubber-tired UNIMOBIL monorail systems to various United States clients since 1969, the most recent at the 1984 New Orleans World Exposition.TGI officials have changed the original UMI design to serve urban circulation and distribution applications such as hospital and university campuses, business parks and airports.

"The acquisition of UMI technology broadens and strengthens the TGI product line," said Thomas Stone, TGI president and former University of Utah engineering professor.

Stone said the UMI monorail could have application in Salt Lake City by making connections to the Utah Transit Authority's proposed light rail system.
