Valley fire departments over the weekend battled nine minor grass fires fueled by the recent dry spell and high winds and aggravated by sparks from passing trains, officials said.

"The main problem lately has been the railroad," said Salt Lake City Fire Battalion Chief Bob Price.West Valley City, Salt Lake City and County fire crews battled one fire Friday afternoon apparently started by sparks from a braking train in the area of 780 S. 56th West.

Eight other grass fires started over the weekend as of Sunday afternoon, a fire dispatcher said, including several along the median on I-15 evidently started by cigarettes from passing cars.
