The death toll from Hurricane Georges' vicious pass through the Caribbean soared past 400 Friday as authorities in the Dominican Republic confirmed 265 deaths in that country.

Officials in the nation, whose 8 million people share the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, said the number of confirmed deaths from Georges had risen to 265, compared to 206 previously reported, with an additional 79 people still missing and 200,000 homeless.Authorities in Haiti said Friday that at least 150 of that nation's 7 million people had been killed with 40 still missing and almost 170,000 left homeless.

The latest reports raised Georges' total death toll to at least 443. In addition to the deaths on Hispaniola, 11 people were killed in Puerto Rico, four in St. Kitts, two in Antigua, one in the Bahamas and six in Cuba.
