Clearfield High was celebrating Homecoming Friday night, and Falcon fans figured they had the perfect opponent. Viewmont came into the game winless in Region 1, and with only one win on the season.

For three quarters the Vikings looked like they might spoil Clearfield's fun, but the Falcons exploded for 24 fourth-quarter points to break open a tight game and send the students to the traditional Homecoming dance celebrating a 45-13 win over Viewmont.Clearfield looked to have an easy night when Sam Saunders caught the opening kickoff and ran practically untouched 97 yards down the sideline for the evening's initial score.

After the Falcon defense forced Viewmont to punt on its first possession, Clearfield went 51 yards in eight plays to increase the gap to 14-0, the touchdown coming on a 13-yard Timm Donaldson-to-Justin Brimhall pass.

In the second quarter Clearfield had a chance to score an early knockout when the Falcons recovered a muffed punt at the Viewmont 19-yard line. However, the Viking defense stiffened and forced a fumble two plays later.

The blowout would have to wait.

Late in the second quarter Donaldson dropped back to pass and was hit hard by the Viewmont defense. The ball came loose, and on the first bounce popped into the hands of Viewmont's Josh Bake, who ran 23 yards to close the gap to the halftime score of 14-7.

Clearfield coach Randy Johnson wasn't surprised at the close score at halftime.

"They play hard-nosed defense," said Johnson. "They came back and scored on us. We kind of panicked a little bit."

Halftime apparently helped the Falcons calm down.

After trading touchdowns with Viewmont in the third quarter, the Falcon offense kicked into gear.

Justin Hamblin kicked a 27-yard field goal, and on the next possession Scott Jones hit a huge hole in the middle of the Viewmont defensive line, and went 28 yards for a touchdown.

Viewmont responded with a nice drive to midfield, but hopes of keeping the game close disappeared when Herschel Stewart intercepted a Viking pass at the Clearfield 11-yard line.

Two plays later Donaldson hit Mike Wojchiechowski for an 89-yard touchdown.

Johnson was pleased with the offensive balance.

"Some nights one back goes forever, and some nights we pass well," said Johnson. "It's just what's there."

The win moves Clearfield to 3-1 in Region 1, and 4-2 overall. Viewmont drops to 0-3 in the region and 1-5 on the season.
