A defense can get demoralized when it gets so close to the quarterback, inches from sacks, inches from making big plays, only to see him escape.
There's no one more demoralizing these days than North Carolina State's Jamie Barnette. The N.C. State junior quarterback constantly escaped the clutches and grabs of Syracuse defenders Thursday night to throw for 282 yards and one touchdown and rush for 67 yards and two more scores as the Wolfpack (3-1) upset the 11th-ranked Orangemen 38-17.
Barnette upstaged Syracuse Heisman Trophy candidate Donovan McNabb, who was intercepted twice and held to 17 total yards in the opening half as the Wolfpack built a 28-10 lead.
Torry Holt was once again Barnette's favorite target, catching six passes for 132 yards as the senior receiver became the school's career leader in receiving yards.
Syracuse came into the game averaging 47 points - third-best in the nation - but the Wolfpack offense dominated the Orangemen.
It was the Wolfpack's second upset over a highly ranked team in the last three weeks. N.C. State beat then-No. 2 Florida State 24-7 on Sept. 12 to move to 20th in The Associated Press poll before falling out after a 33-30 loss at Baylor.
