You have tolerated incompetent or unpleasant colleagues, well-meaning principals, a few ungrateful parents and unresponsive school board members.

You heard you were paid too much, for doing too little. You heard you were America's last hope for greatness. The time has come to take down the posters and the charts.

You can breathe in thoughts of a few days' rest before summer school. You lightly dwell on private promises to strengthen ties with a husband, daughter or son, always in place while you taught, but somehow not quite close enough.

So the year is over, teacher. You can close the classroom door. It was a job well done.
