A car heading down Little Cottonwood Canyon veered off the road Wednesday and rolled once, injuring four passengers.

The driver lost control about two miles up the canyon about 9:30 p.m., Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Stout said."The car went off the side of the road, hit a large hole and some boulders and that was basically it," he said.

Patrick Sweeney, 17, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, sustained severe head and chest injuries and was transported by medical helicopter to LDS Hospital. Thursday morning, he was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.

It was unclear if Sweeney was wearing a seat belt, Stout said.

The driver and two other passengers sustained only minor injuries and were taken to Alta View Hospital, Stout said.
