UTAH SECTION: Ryan Rhees from Gladstan Golf Course beat Nick Klassen from Entrada GC in 19 holes Wednesday in the Utah Section PGA Match-Play Championships at Wingpointe Golf Course.
Rhees was one down going into 18 and he made a 15-foot birdie putt to extend the match. Klassen ran into trouble off the 19th tee, enabling Rhees to take the win.
NIKE CUTTING ENDORSEMENTS: Some NBA players may be left without a shoe deal this year, as Nike announced plans to cut endorsement spending by about $100 million annually.
The cuts will not affect all NBA players, as the athletic shoe and clothing giant does still plan to spend about $200 million a year on athletes who will endorse its products.
The money Nike saves in sports marketing will be shifted into advertising.
ANOTHER TYSON OBSTACLE: Mike Tyson's representatives want to clear a major obstacle toward regaining a license for the former heavyweight champion - settlement with two men who accuse Tyson of assault following a traffic accident. The attempt to settle comes after two Nevada boxing commissioners said they want to know what happened in Maryland before they vote on giving Tyson a license.
CARRIER SUSPENDED: Detroit safety Mark Carrier was suspended for one game by the NFL because of his helmet-to-helmet hit that left Tampa Bay's Brice Hunter with a concussion.
COLTS INK HEYWARD: The Indianapolis Colts signed Craig "Ironhead" Heyward to a one-year, $650,000 contract, about a month after the fullback was released by St. Louis.
GRAND SLAM CUP: Andre Agassi needed just 34 minutes to beat Cedric Pioline 6-0, 6-0 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam Cup in Munich, Germany. In a first-round match, Karol Kucera beat Hicham Arazi 6-4, 6-4. In a women's quarterfinals Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna double-faulted on match point at 5-4 in the second set and went on to lose 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 to Patty Schnyder.
3A GIRLS TOURNEY: The Ogden High girls tennis team will try to defend its 3A championship, beginning Friday afternoon at BYU. First-round action for the 3A tournament begins at 2:30 p.m., with the semifinals and finals slated for Saturday.
Also, the 1A baseball tournament resumes Friday at UVSC with semifinal games between Tintic and Panguitch at 11 a.m. followed by Wendover and Green River at 1:30 p.m.
