UTAH-ARIZONA SHOOTOUT: For the eighth straight year, the home team was victorious in the annual Utah-Arizona golf shootout.

The Arizonans dominated the singles matches Tuesday and rolled to a 48-24 victory in the Ryder Cup-like matches at Lake Powell National Golf Club in Page, Ariz.

The Arizona amateurs had led just 20-16 after Monday's four ball matches, but only lost one of 12 matches Tuesday. Sandy's Steve Poulson defeated Scott Ogorek 2-1 for Utah's only win. Two other Utahns, Todd Barker and Kevin Haslam, tied their matches, but six Utah players were swept 3-0.

UTAH SECTION PGA: Gladstan assistant Ryan Rhees and Mountain View assistant Mark Owen each fired 6-under 66s at Wingpointe Golf Course during the qualifying round of the 1998 Utah Section PGA Match Play Championship.

Rhees took the No. 1 seed into match play by winning the scorecard playoff, with his back nine score of 31 being one better than Owen's 32. Eight others were given a bye into the second round of match play, while 14 participated in the first round of match play Tuesday afternoon.

The first-round results were: Quentin Sasser defeated Mike Bicker 5-and-4; Roy Christensen defeated Clark Garso 5-and-4; Greg Stimpson defeated Kelly Class 6-and-5; Vaugh Robinson defeated Jeff Jerman Jr., 4-and-2; Paul Phillips defeated Jason Jerman 2-and-1; and Kent Abeg-glen defeated Tony Mc-Qui-vey 3-and-2.

In the senior division, Steve Burke of Millsite Golf Course shot a one-over 73 to take the No. 1 seed into match play on Wednesday. First-round senior match results included Joey Bonsignore defeating Bob Rudd 3-and-1; Jim Bolton defeating Gary Mathie 3-and-1, and Bob Flagler defeating Bob Wagner 5-and-3.

The match play tournament continues at Wingpointe Wednesday and concludes Thursday with semifinal and final matches.


GRAND SLAM CUP: Martina Hingis advanced to the semifinals in the $6.7 million Grand Slam Cup Tuesday by beating Conchita Martinez 6-2, 7-5 in Munich, Germany.
