California police on Saturday apprehended a runaway suspect in the death of Ogden Fire Capt. Amy Armstrong who was killed last year when a tree fell on the truck she was driving.
Steven Matthew Locke, 39, was taken into custody by the Ventura Police Department Fugitive and Apprehension Team. Locke had been at large since September, when he failed to appear for his sentencing hearing in the negligent homicide of Amy Armstrong. The Northern Utah Criminal Apprehension Team received an anonymous tip that Locke was in California and contacted the Ventura Police Department, said a Weber County Sheriff's Office news release. He is being held in California on an unrelated charge, awaiting extradition to Utah.
Armstrong, an eight-year veteran with the Ogden Fire Department, was killed August 12, 1997, while driving home through Ogden Canyon. Steven Locke and his brother were cutting down a tree on private property, which fell onto the road, crushing the cab of Armstrong's truck.
Armstrong was the Ogden Fire Department's first female captain.
