Former President Theodore Roosevelt should be awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery as leader of the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War, House lawmakers said.

"I believe the Army should do the right thing - approve the medal," Rep. Stephen Buyer, R-Ind., said Monday at the first hearing on the issue."The valor displayed by Theodore Roosevelt was absolutely extraordinary, breathtaking," Rep. Paul McHale, D-Pa., told the House National Security Committee's panel on military personnel.

The Army is currently considering awarding Roosevelt the medal, but the president would get to make any final decision.
