WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Mountain View High School stars Erin Thorn and Heather Cheesman, who averaged 17 and 13 points respectively as juniors, have verbally committed to play their college ball at BYU. The duo will join MVHS alums Lori Henry and Lisa Osguthorpe on the Cougars' roster. The NCAA early signing period begins Nov. 11.
MEN'S GOLF: Sophomore Billy Harvey shot a two-round score of 142 to help BYU to a second-place standing after two rounds of play Monday at the Husky Invitational. With a 729 team total, the Cougars are only three strokes off the lead entering the final round at the 7,003 yard par 72 Gold Mountain Golf Club in Brereton, Wash.
Northwestern shot a 726 to lead the field in the team competition, with BYU and Oregon tied for second at 729. Stanford is in fourth with a 733.
The Northwestern twosome of Luke Donald and Josh Habig shot two-round totals of 141 to share the individual lead. Harvey is tied with two others for third place at 142.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Outside hitter Helen Hjorth has been named WAC Pacific Division player of the week after leading the Cougars to a 2-0 record last week with wins over Weber State and Wyoming. For the week, Hjorth hit .444 with 200 kills, 22 digs, six blocks, an assist and an ace.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Midfielder Amy Kofoed was named WAC Pacific Division player of the week following a three-goal performance in wins over Montana and Butler.
FOOTBALL: Weber State running back Morgan Welch, who pulled together his second 200-yard game in two weeks in the Wildcat's 27-20 upset over Montana, has been named the Big Sky Conference offensive player of the week.
Welch, a 5-8, 200-pound junior from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, rushed for 217 yards and one touchdown on 36 carries. Welch ran for 123 yards in the second half, including a 57-yard touchdown in the third quarter, to help the Wildcats erase a 10-point second-half deficit.
Welch has rushed for 793 yards in four games this season and leads Division I-AA with an average of 198.3 yards per game.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: JoLynne Godfrey was named Big Sky Conference player of the week, with 26 kills in victories over Montana State and Montana.
