(The Last Graduation Of Life)
Gary Walter Horrocks, 70, passed away peacefully the morning of September 25, 1998 as a result of a 40-year affliction with ankylosing spondylitis. He was born January 5, 1928 in Salt Lake City to Walter L. and Marcella Hanigan Horrocks. Following graduation from East High School, he served two years in the Navy aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. He then attended LDS Business College, the University of Utah and DeForest Technical Institute in Chicago.
Gary and Joan (Hovey) recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their first date followed by 47 years of a joyous marriage; their wedding having taken place in 1951 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Gary and Joan began their married life in Chicago where he attended broadcast electronics school. After their return to Salt Lake he was engaged in a 41-year career in broadcast and satellite television. A highlight of those years included the assignment to design, supervise construction, and implement all new equipment for the new KTVX television and radio studios on Fremont Drive in Salt Lake City. Among his many accomplishments at Bonneville Satellite was the design and building of a new technical operating center and satellite transmission facilities for Sea World Parks and Tandy/Radio Shack. His good friend and long time associate, Pete Petersen, worked with him on these assignments.
Gary particularly enjoyed everyday life with his wife and family and never missed a chance to make a gathering into a party. Many traditions were started and continued throughout the years. He tried to be best friends with his children and grandchildren and helped wherever he could. One of his favorite things was to go on short trips with his sweetheart Joan to just talk, listen to music, and enjoy each others company. He always took her with him on business trips whenever he could.
He was an active High Priest in the Valley View 3rd Ward in the Holladay North Stake. He held various church positions during his life, the last being secretary to the High Priest Group. During his later years, Gary accelerated his study of church history and doctrine. He will be missed in all that we do.
He is survived by his wife Joan; children, Karen J.H. (Jared T.) Nelson, Steven G. (Julie) Horrocks, James S. (Colleen) Horrocks, David J. Horrocks, and Jill Ann Horrocks. His eight grandchildren are Stephanie (Keith), Adam, Michael, Melanie, Haley, Robert, Jonathan, and Whitney. His first great-grandchild is due in January.
