Edwin R. Backman passed away at the Federal Heights Rehabilitation Center on September 23, 1998.

He was born June 2, 1918 to Joseph W. and Katherine Ryan Backman in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married the love of his life, Laile Goodwin, on June 10, 1941. He graduated from West High School where he lettered in football and basketball. He was an ardent racquetball player at Deseret Gymnasium, competing with the best at that game. He was a member of the LDS Church, being active in M-men Basketball for many years. He attended the University of Utah for two years. Like his father before him, he was a locomotive engineer for Union Pacific, retiring after 40 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, where he saw service in the railroad battalion that hosted troop trains across France and Germany.He is survived by three sons: Beau Buck (Mary Belle), of Sandy, Utah; Rick Ryan (Claudia), of Colorado; Jan Joseph, of Colorado; one sister, Peggy Elaine Backman, of Salt Lake City, his principle care giver during the years of his illness; one brother, Joseph William (Ardelle); five grandsons, Brett, Mark, Shane, Burke, and Colby; two granddaughters, Rachelle and Kindra; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Helen Zack; many great cousins.

Graveside service will be held Monday, September 28, 1998 at 1 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 So. 1700 E. Friends and family may call Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple.
