Pennies, dimes and dollars have helped Primary Children's Medical Center provide health care to needy children for more than 75 years through the annual "Pennies by the Inch" campaign.
This year's campaign runs through Oct. 15 and will be conducted by volunteers throughout the Intermountain region. It began as a "Pennies Parade" created by the Primary organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Children and adults were asked to contribute a penny for every birthday. After the LDS Church gave its children's hospital to the community, the door-to-door campaign became known as "Pennies by the Inch."
Campaign chairwoman Rita Tingey is urging people to "measure their heart" and give money to the center. All of the donations go directly into charity care. Physicians whose patients are served by the contributions donate their services, as well.
Donations can also be sent directly to the hospital: Primary Children's Medical Center Foundation, PO Box 58249, Salt Lake City, UT 84158-0249.
