Aaron Stecker ran for 118 yards and scored four touchdowns Saturday in leading Western Illinois to a 31-3 rout of Southern Utah.
Stecker, a senior, broke his school's record for career TDs with his 28th, a 68-yard pass from mark Zanders with 3:21 left in the game. The old mark was 27 by Noria Steward from 1962-65.The Leathernecks (3-1), ranked 14th in the latest I-AA poll, jumped out to a 17-3 lead with touchdown runs of 2 and 3 yards by Stecker. He also had a 12-yard TD in the third period.
The Thunderbirds (1-2) rolled up 196 yards on the ground but only 41 in the air. Their lone score came on a 27-yard field goal by Jerry Holstron in the second quarter.
Zander was 8-of-15 for 168 yards. He was sacked twice but didn't allow an interception. Stecker caught three passes for 72 yards.
Southern Utah goes on the road again next week to face Northridge in a 4 p.m. MST contest then returns home for the following week to face St. Mary's on Oct. 10.
