Davis County Justice Court got a bit batty Tuesday.

Two small bats caused pandemonium on the second floor of the county courthouse, possibly after employees unknowingly turned the heat up on the animals."There was a lot of hysteria here, said court clerk Teri Ruth.

Ruth said the bats squeezed their way through the heat vent just above her desk, appearing in the courtroom at about 2:30 p.m.

She said the bats swooped and chased court clerks in the office while animal control officers were responding.

"I was scared to death," said Ruth, who feared the bats may have been carrying rabies.

Animal control officers caught one of the bats, which was not tested for rabies because there was no human contact.

The other bat is believed to be hiding out in the vent.
