The downtown Sears store will close near the end of the month to make way for a new outlet in the Provo Towne Centre.

The mall store is scheduled to open Oct. 3. The 91,000-square-foot store will nearly double the size of the old store at 207 N. 100 West."Our new store's increased space allows us to bring Provo customers new departments and merchandise," said Roger Hamlet, general manager. "Plus, we'll meet the company's goal of being located in a dominant regional mall wherever we do business."

The store will feature Sears' "softer side," especially apparel and accessories, he said. It also will offer hardware, appliances and electronics.

About 75 new jobs are being created by the store, which will employ about 225 people. The Sears at Provo Towne Centre is one of 23 full-line stores the company plans to open nationwide this year as it continues a $4 billion building and remodeling program.

Sears will join Dillard's, which opened last month, and JC Penney as the mall's three anchor stores.
