The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a warning Friday about a telephone scheme by prison inmates to defraud Utahns.
Apparently, individuals from the Cook County (Illinois) Department of Corrections are making collect telephone calls to various Utah residents. When people accept the charges for the call, the inmate will say he is an FBI agent requesting help in an ongoing investigation. He will then ask the Utahn to send a money order to him in the Chicago area or provide him with personal credit card information.
The FBI's statement said it does not solicit money from the public to conduct its investigations and does not make collect calls to individuals.
If you believe you have been a victim of this or a similar type of fraud, the FBI encourages you to call its Salt Lake office at 579-1400.
