Rep. Merrill Cook, R-Utah, says a foul-up in Medicare reform has forced 17 home health-care companies in Utah out of business - and more than 1,000 such firms nationwide.

So he and other concerned GOP members called a press conference Thursday urging Congress to fix that problem - which often reimburses such companies for less than their services cost. He wants them to be reimbursed their full costs."When Congress passed the Balanced Budget Act, it earmarked $16.1 billion in home-care savings. The latest estimates show that the Interim Payment Systemwill reduce Medicare spending on home care by $37.1 billion," Cook said.

"That's twice as much as we intended to save. We must bring the savings back in line with Congress's intent," he said.
