A badly bruised and cut newborn, her umbilical cord still attached, was found on the shoulder of the Pennsylvania Turnpike by a highway worker who at first thought he was looking at a doll.

"The closer I got, I knew it was a baby. I got nervous. I said, `This can't be real.' It scared me," said Guy Jeffrey, an assistant maintenance foreman for the turnpike. The baby, found Monday afternoon, may have been thrown from the window of a moving vehicle, state police told doctors.

She was in serious condition late Monday at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
