Fire gutted a popular mule-drawn barge that plied a 19th-century canal. Authorities suspected arson.

The Georgetown, a wooden reproduction of the original C&O Canal boats, carried 50,000 people a year along the canal. Doug Faris, superintendent of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park, said Saturday the 16-year-old boat will cost about $8,000 to replace.The fire started about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
