Gov. Ben Nelson isn't shy about official state stuff.

Four months after naming Kool-Aid the official state soft drink, he picked milk as the official beverage on Thursday.Since the Legislature last year gave the governor the ability to make official designations, Nelson has also named the channel catfish the official state fish.

The milk choice did not sit well with the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

"We hope he thinks about the fact that there is a hunk of veal in every glass of milk," said Bruce Friedrich, a PETA spokesman in Norfolk, Va. "Cow's milk belongs to baby cows, not to human beings."

Nelson brushed off the criticism: "They have a mind-set that goes one direction and I think that's a minority point of view."
