A man was killed when a van landed on the cab of his truck on I-15 Tuesday. The crash left two others in critical condition.
Killed was:Clifton Dean Jinkins, Morgan, 40.
Jinkins was heading south near 31st Street in Ogden when a northbound van veered into the median and into southbound lanes about 6:30 a.m. The van slammed into a car, which sent it flying through the air, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Chris Williams said.
It landed on the cab of Jinkins' compact pickup truck. Jinkins died on the scene.
"The way it was described to me, the damage was so great and the impact so huge, seat belts weren't really a factor in the crash," Lt. Verdi White II said.
Paramedics transported the driver of the van, 38-year-old Hector Trevino, to McKay-Dee Hospital. The Ogden man remained in critical condition Wednesday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. It was unclear what caused him to veer into southbound lanes.
Stephannie Johnson, 27, the driver of the car, underwent emergency surgery at Ogden Regional Medical Center Tuesday but remained in critical condition Wednesday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The impact from the van pushed the car into a semitrailer truck. The driver of the semi was not injured, Williams said.
Troopers are still investigating the accident.
