A Roman Catholic priest suspected of embezzling $1.3 million from church donations to pay for gambling junkets and fancy cars may have been murdered in his nursing home, police said.
A nurse responding to an alarm Friday in the room of the Rev. Walter Benz found the priest's intravenous line and oxygen tube had been removed. A man and a woman were in the room, and the man was holding Benz's hand, police Superintendent Thomas Sturgeon said Tuesday.Medical personnel at the Vincentian Home in suburban Pittsburgh tried unsuccessfully to revive Benz, and the unidentified couple slipped out without being questioned, Sturgeon said. They remained at large Tuesday.
