I am appalled at the City Council's decision that turned down the deputizing of local officers as INS agents. I think the main point of this issue was very vague and not put across well enough by the media. The purpose of this was to be able to detain repeat offenders for deportation. Yet it became another issue of race.
One cannot refute the facts and statistics the police department gave. I am shocked that the Hispanic community gave such a large protest to this issue. They spoke of the Council to look beyond race, yet they themselves where putting their own self-interests above that of the whole community. People as a whole want safer streets for their children to play on and cleaner, drugless schools for them to attend. So why was such a mistrust put into those who enforce laws to protect us?Frank Wright
