Mexico City's leftist government became the latest victim of political fashion when officials of the city's police department banned female staff members from wearing miniskirts, saying they looked unprofessional.

The move sparked an immediate backlash in the capital, where the miniskirt is commonplace on city streets.Making matters worse, the left-wing Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), which runs Mexico City, has consistently led attacks against its conservative rivals in recent years for prohibiting public workers from wearing miniskirts in some of the cities under their domain.

Mayor Cuauhtemoc Cardenas fired the official who ordered the ban, saying it had nothing against the skimpy fashion item.
