SANDY — Lee Mitchell, the head coach of Alta's boys and girls soccer teams, was named the 2006 Rocky Mountain Division I girls high school coach of the year, an award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, at a convention in Indianapolis on Friday.

"It's a great honor," said Mitchell. "I feel very humble knowing there were so many great coaches. It's the honor of a lifetime."

Mitchell has attended the NSCAA's convention for six years and has enjoyed the chance to learn from the great minds of the game, such as Anson Dorrance, the women's soccer coach at the University of North Carolina, who guided the team to a championship in 2003. This year, Mitchell sat in a lecture given by sport psychologists for the English National Team.

Mitchell is the only soccer coach Alta has known since the sport became sanctioned, for the boys in 1983 and the girls in 1989, and he has won four state titles with the boys and four titles with the girls.
