The National Kidney Foundation has appointed former Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, to its newly created position of chancellor.
"In his new role, he will act as a roving ambassador for the foundation, working in many public and behind-the-scenes capacities to help further the cause of organ donation, health-care funding and other issues," said Foundation Chairman Joseph Brand.Garn said, "I've had many once-in-a-lifetime experiences, but the most satisfying was donating a kidney to my daughter, Susan.
"It made me acutely aware of how an organ transplant can transform the recipient's life. I've been a strong advocate of organ donation ever since, and the National Kidney Foundation has always been in the forefront of organizations working to increase donation. It seems like we're a good match," Garn said.
