A Friday morning fire that started in some small trees spread across some shrubbery and then to a Redwood Road strip mall before Salt Lake County firefighters could extinguish it.

Two people passing by at 4:30 a.m. spotted the fire burning in a tree and contacted a nearby Salt Lake County deputy sheriff who was involved in a traffic stop. The deputy contacted the fire department, Salt Lake County Fire Capt. Bill Brass said. The fire at Century Hair and Nails, 4900 S. Redwood, caused about $60,000 in damage to the building and its contents, Brass said. Another unit in the small strip mall was damaged. Fire crews had the blaze out in about five minutes, Brass said.

There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is considered suspicious and is still under investigation.

"The fire started in some landscaping, in 3-foot trees, and there's no reason that it should have started that way," Brass said.
