William Hyrum "Bill" Cooper, of Sandy, UT, formerly of Union and La Grande, OR, died at his home on Wednesday, August 26, 1998, at the age of 84.

Bill was born in La Grande, OR, on April 25, 1914. He was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During World War II he served as a supply officer out of Camp Stoneman, CA taking supplies to the armed forces overseas and returning with the wounded to the United States. Bill married Verla Ward on October 8, 1942, in Union, OR and later solemnized their marriage in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. For over 40 years Bill ranched on the Grande Ronde Valley. It was during this time that he served as a Soil Conservation Committeeman for the State of Oregon.A daughter, Colleen, preceded him in death on November 5, 1968. Survivors include his wife, Verla; three daughters, Linda (Jim) Topping, Mt. Vernon, OR, Susan (Scott) Shaw, Nampa, ID, Jil (Dan) Colwell, Sandy, UT; two sons, Bill Cooper, La Grande, OR, and Ward (Gwyn) Cooper, Bennettsville, SC; also included are 16 grandchildren; Rick and Idonna Cantrell, Durfur, OR; Warren and Ann-Ara Black, Ukiah, CA; 33 nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held at the cemetery in Union, OR On Friday, September 4, 1998, at 2 p.m., with Bishop Tom Martin of Union Ward officiating. Larkin Sunset Gardens, Sandy, UT, and Dale Proffit Mortuary of La Grande, OR are taking care of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations be made to the organization "of choice".
