Religious beliefs in Los Angeles are more diverse than those in London or New York City, according to J. Gordon Melton of the Institute for the Study of American Religion.

The Santa Barbara organization found 600 distinct religious traditions in Los Angeles and Southern California.The area claims the largest Buddhist temple in the Western Hemisphere and perhaps the nation's largest concentration of Islamics. The number of Jews affiliated with synagogues equals the membership of old-line Protestant denominations in Los Angeles.

The Roman Catholic Church has the largest following, claiming 3 million followers in Los Angeles County alone.
