Women are more attracted to an honest face even if it is less masculine, according to a study published on Wednesday.

A man with more feminine facial features seems more trustworthy and loving as a potential father, while masculine features are associated with coldness and dishonesty, said the report by David Perrett of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. The research, published in the scientific journal Nature, challenges a traditional view that people are more attracted to members of the opposite sex with more extreme gender-related facial features.

Perrett and his colleagues showed computer-generated images of male and female faces to people in Japan and Scotland. The images were manipulated to emphasize either the male or female features, and the subjects were asked which they preferred.

Both sexes were more attracted to the feminized versions.
