A court in a southern Russian city has convicted two men of kidnapping a pair of LDS missionaries, according to a newspaper report Tuesday.
The abductors kept Elders Andrew Lee Propst, 20, of Lebanon, Ore., and Travis Robert Tuttle, 20, of Gilbert, Ariz., in handcuffs for five days in March in the Volga River city of Saratov, about 450 miles southeast of Moscow, and demanded $300,000 ransom from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Sergei Yemtsov, 44, and Alexei Shkryabin, 19, were arrested the next day. Yemtsov, a businessman, told the court he had decided to kidnap the LDS missionaries in order to repay a $100,000 debt.
"I would have never committed this crime except for financial pressure," he said during the trial, according to the business daily Kommersant.
The court sentenced Yemtsov to four years in prison. Shkryabin got a suspended sentence.
