A man accused of poisoning seagulls in the Burger Bar parking lot in Roy has been fined $500 and placed on probation.

David Fowler, 42, of Taylor, was sentenced Thursday by Weber County Justice Judge Craig Storey.Fowler, a shift manager at the Burger Bar, told wildlife officers that he poisoned the birds because they were a nuisance. The seagulls would congregate for handouts from restaurant patrons.

Fowler pleaded guilty to a single charge of wanton destruction of wildlife, a class B misdemeanor, earlier this month.

A total of 25 California gulls, the Utah state bird, died from the April 15 incident at the Burger Bar.
