A former mayor of Iaeger has admitted embezzling money from the small coal-field town, which was forced to shut down for three weeks after nearly going bankrupt.
Dale Adkins pleaded guilty Friday in McDowell County Circuit Court in Welch to one count of felony embezzlement and was ordered to make restitution to the financially struggling town. He also pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of unlawful expenditure of public funds. He admitted paying himself more than his official salary and writing town checks for personal use, said prosecuting attorney Sid Bell.
"One of our main interests has been trying to help the town recover some of its lost funds," Bell said. "The plea agreement does require the defendant to pay restitution to the town."
Sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 30. Adkins faces a minimum of one year and a maximum of 10 years in jail. The former mayor remains free on $20,000 bond. He now resides in Jacksonville, Fla.
