Police are trying to figure out how an armed man escaped their grasp after robbing a bank Thursday.

A lone gunman entered U.S. Bank, 1884 N. University Parkway, about 2:20 p.m. and demanded money from the tell-ers, said Provo Police Capt. Keith Teuscher. After receiving an undisclosed amount of money, the man ran toward Raintree Apartments, 1849 N. Freedom Blvd."He ran into the parking lot near the apartment complex," Teuscher said. "There's a lot of shrubbery and trees where he secluded himself and then got away."

Police had surrounded the area within minutes of receiving a call about the robbery. Officers using dogs searched the banks of the Provo River but were unable to locate the man. One report said that someone driving a truck picked up the man and the pair went toward Orem.

Witnesses said the man wore a goatee with mustache and a tan hat with a 2-inch brim. Provo police have posted photographs of the man on the Internet at (www.-provo.org/-ppd) and are asking for help in locating him.

On Aug. 12, First Security Bank at 92 N. University Ave. was robbed, but police say descriptions of the two men are different and they don't believe the robberies are related.
