A nurse's aide handed the wrong baby to a new mother, who nursed the newborn and then discovered the mistake when she went to change her baby boy's diaper and saw she was cuddling a girl.

The woman's son was still sleeping in the nursery at Lowell General Hospital with about 15 other babies. The baby's father said the couple had nothing to say about the switch, which happened early Sunday, and asked not to be identified.

"We are not certain as to exactly what happened, but we consider it a real serious breach of security," said Norm Deschene, the hospital's executive vice president and chief operating officer.
