James "Bo" Gritz says he and his volunteer searchers are getting closer to finding abortion clinic bombing suspect Eric Rudolph.
If so, the former Green Beret colonel would have accomplished in a few days what scores of federal agents using helicopters and other high-tech devices have been unable to do for seven months.Gritz said Monday that one of his people may have encountered the fugitive or one of his scouts twice in a matter of hours near an unoccupied vacation home in the dense forest near here.
Law enforcement officials doubt it and say they've heard nothing from Gritz's group on the matter.
"If this was such a big deal, I think we would have gotten a call," said Southeast Bomb Task Force spokesman Patrick Crosby.
Rudolph is charged with bombing an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 29. The explosion killed an off-duty police officer and wounded a nurse.
