A hapless thief made it a bit too easy for Salt Lake police to catch up with him Monday after one of his victims picked his pocket and came up with the suspect's wallet, business cards and passport.

The unfortunate mugger also was forced to flee the scene of the crime without one of his shoes. It all unfolded at 5:45 p.m. Monday at the Olympian Restaurant, 2181 S. 700 East, where the 28-year-old man walked into the restaurant, asked for a glass of water and then grabbed a stash of bills from the cash register.

A Salt Lake police report said a 17-year-old waitress attempted to stop him from leaving by blocking the door, but he pushed her aside. Another employee, a 17-year-old male, also tried to stop the thief, but the thief started hitting both teens so he could get away.

During the struggle, the girl grabbed the man's wallet, and the boy grabbed his shoe.

The car, with dealer plates, was from a Salt Lake dealership where the suspect had been employed. If the wallet, car and business cards hadn't been enough to lead police to their man, the theft was recorded on videotape.

The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of robbery.
