The state fire marshal is investigating an early morning fire that gutted four downtown businesses in Spanish Fork.

Spanish Fork Police Lt. Carl Johnston said county dispatchers received a call at 2:24 a.m. Tuesday reporting the blaze, which spread from 166 North to 172 North on Main Street. The owners of Chris' Hair Center, Dirty Jo Punsters, Best Brand Sewing and Vacuum and J&J Construction were all informed of the incident this morning, Johnston said.

Firefighters were cleaning up debris from the fire until about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"It appeared to me as I went by that the buildings are not a total loss, but at least three would have extensive damage," he said. A damage estimate was not available Tuesday morning.

Johnston said the probe should determine what started the fire.
