After a relatively trouble-free introduction of women to the corps, Virginia Military Institute is trying to keep things calm as it welcomes another coed freshman class.

There will be 22 sophomore women and 34 new women joining the largest corps in history. There are more than 1,400 cadets, and it's so crowded that 20 upperclassmen will have to live off campus.Superintendent Josiah Bunting told student officers Friday that there's too much potential trouble to assume all will continue to run smoothly in a barracks that had housed only men for 157 years.

He pointed out there are now nearly twice as many women in the close quarters of VMI's spartan barracks, and the sophomore women are now allowed to date upperclassmen.
